In Uses and Gratifications theory, people are using Computer Mediated Communications to meet a need or some type of benefit.
Through CMC people can gain access to information they might not be able to otherwise (example: Through my internship I posted about Rodney, our co-founder, being on the news just an hour before he was going to be, so our audience could tune in).
Sometimes, CMC can be more preferable (in the case of my internship: it is much easier for my to post on Facebook and Twitter, and than to go stand outside Fred Meyer and try to talk to people about TextNoMore).
Lastly, CMC can be a substitute form of communication. At my internship, I talk to my boss through email the majority of the time, rather than driving into the city to discuss a few things or calling him on the telephone. Of course, we do get together for meetings every once and awhile.
People, much like myself, use Facebook and Twitter because they gain some kind of need through it that also brings them a benefit. With my internship, our company benefits greatly when people download the app because they see a Post or Tweet that I wrote.
